The healing power of oil
For centuries, Ayurvedic medicine has placed immense importance on the use of oil for self-care and in specialized treatments administered by a trained practitioner. In Sanskrit, the word Sneha can be translated as both “oil” and “love.” So in Ayurveda, there is an inherent connection between enveloping the body in oil and enveloping it in love. Both experiences can give a deep feeling of stability, warmth, and comfort.
The ultimate nourisher for both body and mind, Sneha—oil and love—is sukshma, or “subtle.” This allows it to pass through minute channels in the body and penetrate deep into the body’s tissues (dhatus).
Application of oil to the body is deeply nourishing to the tissues and offers many benefits.
